Manufacturers: Herman Miller, KI
This project was complex in scope as it involved a large corporate campus made up of 4 buildings and 4,000 employees. An extremely aggressive timeline—we had less than two months to complete this job—added an element of difficulty to this largescale project. Because of the complexities of this project, a phased schedule was required to exit the buildings with minimal disruption to daily operations. While noteworthy, we work around these types of parameters on a daily basis. With stringent landfill diversion goals focusing on reuse, recycling and donation, our client’s dedication to sustainability is similar to our own. Challenging, yet attainable, the benchmarks for this project were realistic given Rework has the experience and team to get the job done.
Rework’s Decommission team consists of a Director with 30 years’ experience, a LEED Green Associate Program Manager and a Project Manager who all specialize in the decommissioning of corporate facilities. One of our top priorities is diverting landfill waste from job sites nationwide. Our ability to repurpose office furniture as well as recycle materials prevented over 4.4M lbs of furniture from entering landfills in 2021.
This project had over 4,000 Herman Miller Sayl chairs and KI adjustable-height bases. One hundred percent of them were kept out of the landfill. In addition to adjustable-height bases and chairs, the campus included many areas of common space such as industrial grade kitchens, a workout facility, vast amounts of outdoor seating and large quantities of ancillary furniture. Because this project included a variety of furniture, we were excited to infuse the nonoffice products back into the community by joining forces with charitable organizations and other local partners. With a mission of promoting dignity and stability in the community by redirecting donated furniture to families in need, the Bay Area Furniture Bank is an incredible partner and was happy to receive our furniture donations to pass onto community members. Ultimately, these partnerships allowed us to divert numerous pounds of furniture from the landfill. Our commitment to a holistic approach and a greener economy runs deep. By utilizing our nationwide relationships and working with local partners—such as A Better Source—to supplement our Decommission team, we are able to accomplish large-scale projects such as this.
